Job Description
The Jr. Environmental Specialist supports environmental compliance and sustainability efforts within a heavy industry manufacturing facility. T his role assists in implementing, monitoring, and maintaining environmental programs in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, while promoting a culture of environmental responsibility across all operations.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and eager to learn the complex environmental aspects of heavy industrial and mining operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Environmental Manager in ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental regulations (EPA, CARB, CalEPA, SCAQMD, MSHA, and local agencies).
- Conduct routine inspections and audits of plant, quarry, and waste handling areas to verify environmental compliance.
- Collect, analyze, and report environmental data, including air emissions, water quality, dust control, and waste management.
- Assist with the preparation and submission of required environmental permits and reports.
- Support environmental training initiatives for plant and field employees.
- Monitor and document corrective actions for environmental incidents or non-conformances.
- Help manage contractors and vendors involved in environmental sampling, waste disposal, or remediation work.
- Maintain environmental records, documentation, and reporting logs.
- Participate in sustainability and continuous improvement projects to reduce emissions, waste, and resource use.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience in environmental compliance, industrial operations, or manufacturing preferred (cement, mining, or heavy industry experience a plus).
- Certifications: Knowledge of MSHA, RCRA, and Title V air permit requirements desirable.
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and reporting requirements.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and technical writing skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and basic data management.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a plant environment.
Work Environment
- Work performed both in office and plant/quarry environments.
- Exposure to dust, noise, and temperature variations typical of cement manufacturing operations.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and perform fieldwork.
