Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Protein & Packaging Purchasing

  • Execute daily purchasing and replenishment across beef, pork, poultry, and seafood categories in line with supplier programs and forecasts.
  • Support procurement of packaging materials (boxes, films, trays, and labels) to align with production and fulfillment needs.
  • Track open orders, delivery timelines, and confirmations to ensure on-time, complete shipments.
  • Maintain accurate pricing, volume, and product specification records within procurement systems.
  • Partner with operations, QA, and logistics teams to ensure inbound proteins and packaging meet company standards and certifications.

Vendor Coordination

  • Serve as the daily contact for vendor communications, including order confirmations, delivery schedules, and documentation.
  • Escalate supply issues such as shortages, substitutions, or delays to procurement leadership for resolution.
  • Verify supplier compliance with USDA regulations, food safety protocols, and Good Ranchers’ labeling and quality standards.
  • Build and maintain strong supplier relationships to support reliable supply, cost efficiency, and consistent product quality.

Inventory & Logistics Alignment

  • Collaborate with warehouse and fulfillment teams to align purchasing with demand forecasts.
  • Monitor inventory levels to prevent both stockouts and overages.
  • Support logistics with inbound scheduling, paperwork accuracy, and coordination with carriers.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in shipments, product quality, or delivery performance.

Cost Control & Financial Stewardship

  • Continuously monitor and benchmark protein and packaging costs against market trends to identify savings opportunities.
  • Ensure purchases align with approved budgets, pricing agreements, and margin targets.
  • Track and report landed cost variances, including freight, yield loss, and packaging spend.
  • Support leadership in cost analysis, price forecasting, and contract negotiations.
  • Identify and escalate any price fluctuations or vendor changes that could impact gross margin or COGS performance.
  • Maintain disciplined order quantities to optimize costs and minimize waste.
  • Partner with finance to ensure accurate cost reporting, accruals, and invoice reconciliation.

Data & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate procurement data and supplier information in ERP and purchasing systems.
  • Assist in preparing weekly and monthly reports on purchasing, cost performance, and inventory levels.
  • Track and analyze trends in pricing, vendor performance, and fulfillment accuracy.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and cost control.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Agribusiness, Meat Science, or a related field preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience in protein buying, meat procurement, or food supply chain operations (beef, poultry, pork, and/or seafood).
  • Experience in purchasing for retail organizations or consumer-facing brands strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of protein markets, grading systems, and production methods preferred.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems, purchasing platforms, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically as needed to supplier or production facilities.
